Instructions for using AU VPN

  1. You can only connect to vpn with an off campus connection.
  2. If you haven't connected to vpn before, check with ITS to make sure you have a vpn account.
  3. Preferred browser to connect to vpn is Firefox
  4. Browse to https://auvpn.anderson.edu (notice the s -- https:)
  5. VPN uses pop-ups.  Most vpn connection problems are due to pop-up blockers.  If your Pop-up Blocker is enabled you may see a warning message.
  6. Click "OK" to Continue.
  7. If your Pop-up Blocker is enabled you may see the a banner near the top of your browser window.
  8. Click on the banner and select "Always Allow Pop-ups from This Site...".
  9. If your Pop-up Blocker is enabled you may see a dialog box.
  10. Click "Yes".
  11. Enter your Network Username and Password on the Login Box.
  12. Click "OK".
  13. If this is the first time using this VPN on a particular computer you may see a banner near the top of your browser window asking if you want to install a browser Add-on.
  14. Click on the banner and select "Install This Add-on for All Users on This Computer...".
  15. If this is the first time using this VPN on a particular computer you may see a dialog box asking you to install the browser Add-on.
  16. Click "Install".
  17. If this is the first time using this VPN on a particular computer you may see a dialog box asking if you want to accept the security certificate.
  18. Click "Yes".
  19. Connected!
  20. Minimize the screen until you are ready to disconnect.
  21. Assuming you have a university owned laptop, once connected to the vpn double-click the icon on your desktop entitled "network drives".  If all works as planned, you should then see your network drives in "My Computer"
  22. To disconnect,maximize the SS Network Extender pop-up box minimized earlier and click "Disconnect" or simply close the "Connection" window.
  23. You will see dialog box asking if you want to close the window.
  24. Click "OK".


    January 2014 UPDATE:  The newest version of Java, Version 7 Update 51, appears to change Java's security measures. In order to get the VPN to work after this update the following steps must be taken.  Generally this error pops up after a bit.

    "Please confirm the use of the java applet ..."

    Control Panel --> Java --> Security tab --> Edit Site List --> Add the URL you are connecting to the VPN with (e.g.https://vpn.anderson.edu) --> OK --> Try connecting again
